  3. This is for you reading scientific papers. The language can be hard to
  4. interpret and missing the meaning is easy. So here is a guide on how to
  5. interpret common statements.

  7. S: is Statement, I: is interpretation.

  11. S: It has long been known...
  12. I: I haven't bothered to find the original reference.

  14. S: Although no definitive results were reached...
  15. I: The experiments are not finished yet, but I can still do a potboiler

  17. S: Finally, some typical results..

  20. S: Probably a prolonged series of experiments will show...
  21. I: I couldn't spend too much time on this
  22.  
  23. S: Agreement with hypothesis is
  24.     excellent
  25.     good
  26.     satisfactory
  27.     uncertain
  28. I:    reasonable, doubtful, bad, non-existent
  29.  
  30. S: Agreement is as good as may be expected under the circumstances
  31. I: The two variables have nothing to do with each other although I thhought
  32.    so when I started

  34. S: Correct within the order of magnitude
  35. I: Wrong.

  37. S: The results of NN is probably the most dependable
  38. I: NN is one of my students

  40. S: It is probable that...

  43. S: Against this it may be argued that..
  44. I: I have a particularly good rejoinder to this one

  46. S: Of course, much more work is necessary for a definitive answer
  47. I: I can't really make head or tails of the whole thing

  49. S: Unfortunately, no definitive answer is available
  50. I: It seems nobody else understands it either
  51.  
  52. S: The consensus is that...
  53. I: I know a couple of people who agree with me that...
  54.
